HOME SLEEP APNEA TEST (HSAT) FAQS

What is a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT)?

A home sleep apnea test is a portable sleep study completed at home to help determine if you have obstructive sleep apnea (partial or complete closure of your airway during sleep).  It is an easy overnight test to take, and the results will let you know if you are a candidate for treatment.

Who may be a good fit for home sleep apnea testing (HSAT)?

Adults with symptoms such as loud snoring, witnessed breathing pauses, gasping during sleep, morning headaches, or daytime sleepiness, or a high body mass index may be, depending on clinical review, candidates for home testing.

Is a home sleep test the same as a lab study?

No. A home sleep apnea test is more limited and is usually focused on evaluating obstructive sleep apnea. In-lab studies can assess a broader range of sleep disorders and are sometimes recommended when symptoms are more complex.

Is an HSAT as accurate as an in-lab sleep study?

Yes, for most patients.  A small number of patients with more complex sleep disorders who will need an attended sleep study at a medical facility appropriately equipped and staffed.

Who needs home sleep testing?

Home sleep apnea testing is appropriate for most patients with sleep problems, but not all. The screening and review process helps determine whether home testing is the best option or if  another type of sleep evaluation would be more appropriate.
